# Eng Intelligence: Metrics

Use these operations to query aggregated metric data from [Eng Intelligence](/improve/eng-intelligence/eng-intelligence). You can group results and compare them across time periods.

### Required permissions

Your API key must have the `View Dev Metrics` permission, and your workspace must have Eng Intelligence enabled.

### Query workflow

1. Call **List available engineering metric definitions** first. It returns the metric keys, data sources, and the `groupBy`, filter, and aggregation options that each metric supports. Use the exact keys from that response when you build a query.
2. Call **Execute point-in-time engineering metrics queries** to get aggregated metric values. You can group the results and compare them against a prior period.
3. To see the individual event records behind those values (pull requests, deployments, and so on), use the [Eng Intelligence: Trace operation](/api/rest/eng-intel-trace).

Query results come back as `metadata` plus `rows`. Rows are positional, not keyed: the value at index `i` of each row corresponds to `metadata.columns[i]`. Queries are capped at a six-month date range, and trace queries at 500 rows per page.
